Mobile Library

US$ 6200 has been allocated for mobile library personnel (Doko Dais/didis and Readership Promoters).

Most of the books (besides the reference section) and other educational materials (21% of the budget) in the library will be used for the mobile library.

The project primarily aims to run a mobile library system from Barabise and Mahendranagar on a rotational basis. Educational resources will be transported by local Dais/Didis (elder brothers and sisters) using Dokos (traditional bamboo baskets used to transport goods in rural areas) to 10 different routes in each project area. All routes will be in operation at the same time.

  • The Doko dais and didis start out from the regional libraries at the RCC and travel through one route.

  • Each route has two to four stops where books will be kept for about a week to fifteen days. For this duration, the stop will serve as a library where people can come to read and borrow books, newspapers, and magazines. The stops selected are easily accessible and usually schools, bazaars, chautaris and teashops.

  • At the end of the period, the borrowed books are returned to the Doko dais/didis who then move on to the next stop on the route.

  • After the porters visit all the stops on the route, they return to the regional library and take another set of books, and restart the process.

Mobile Library Update:

The mobile library has been started in one route in Barabise and three routes in Mahendranagar. The feedback from this experience will be used to improve upon the mechanism for the other routes.
