Mahendranagar, Kanchanpur District

Mahendranagar lies in the westernmost Terai (flatland) region of Nepal. It is accessible via the east-west Mahendra Highway. It is the administrative center of Kanchanpur district. It is a small town and serves as the commercial center for the districts lying in the north, namely Dadheldhura, Baitadi and Darchula. It has India on the west and the south. The distance from the capital, Kathmandu, has made the population living in Mahendranagar more comfortable with interactions with North-west Indian cities. Many of the children of well to do families go to Nainital and Dehradoon of India to study. Many poor people seek refuge in those same cities for work and livelihood. The intricate social pattern has created many obstacles in the development of this region in general. But the changing wave of reform has brought a twilight of new hope and new horizons.
